One-room schoolhouse to close on California's Catalina Island

Feb. 22, 2010
Students will have to travel 3 hours round trip to attend island's only other school
FromThe Sacramento Bee: One of the last one-room public schoolhouses in California--The Little Red Schoolhouse in Two Harbors on Catalina Island--will soon close, the latest victim of state education cuts. Residents of the island, about 25 miles off the Southern California coast, understand the math, but life will change dramatically for the town's population of 150. Starting this fall, children as young as 5 will be bused more than three hours round trip over mountainous dirt roads to reach the island's only other school, in Avalon.
