End of court case means huge changes for high school girl athletes in Michigan

The U.S. Supreme Court has refused to hear an appeal to a Michigan court ruling that will drastically change how girls' high school sports are scheduled. Beginning in September, seasons will switch for nearly 56,000 girls and 16,000 boys -- along with thousands of officials and coaches and hundreds of school districts. The suit had contended that treating boys' schedules differently from girls' schedules was unfair. In 2001, a federal judge ruled the way girls' sports seasons were scheduled was discriminatory. The judge noted that girls basketball, soccer and golf seasons in Michigan were two to three weeks shorter than those of girls everywhere else in the country who played their sports at traditional times of year.
