Study points to voucher success in Milwaukee

Students in city's voucher program are more likely to graduate than public school students

A second round of results comparing high school graduation figures for the Milwaukee school district and a group of private schools in the city's publicly funded voucher program has reached the same conclusion as a report issued in January: Students who attend voucher schools are more likely to graduate than those who attend Milwaukee public schools.

FROM FEBRUARY 2008: A study of Milwaukee's groundbreaking school voucher program has found that students attending private schools through the program aren't doing much better or worse than students in Milwaukee Public Schools. The researchers' conclusions are based on test results from 2006-07, when they gave a sample of voucher students the same tests given to public school students in Wisconsin. The voucher program allows more than 18,000 Milwaukee children from low-income families to attend private schools, 80 percent of them religious schools.
