16 charter schools approved in Massachusetts

State school board rejects only one application

From The Boston Globe: The Massachusetts Board of Education has approved the establishment of 16 charter schools. The board denied only one of the 17 charter school applications that Education Commissioner Mitchell Chester had recommended for approval. This was the second time that Lynn Preparatory Charter School's application to open a K-8 campus was rejected. The board raised concerns that the provider was trying to convert a private school, Hathaway School, into a charter campus, which is prohibited.

FEBRUARY 2011...from The Boston Globe: The Massachusetts education commissioner has endorsed 17 of 23 pending charter school applications, including 10 that would serve students in Boston beginning next fall or in the following academic year.
