Washington, D.C., closing plan targets 20 schools

From The Washington Post: One in six traditional Washington, D.C., public schools is targeted for closure under a plan put forth by Chancellor Kaya Henderson. The plan would shift resources from maintaining under-enrolled schools to focus on improving academic programs. The 20 schools marked for closure include two middle schools that would be absorbed into high schools, creating a pair of secondary campuses for grades 6-12.

REACTION to closing plan: Parents across the city have signaled their intent to protest, labor leaders say they will push to unionize charter schools, and charter-school advocates vowed to fight for control of vacated buildings.

Earlier...from The Washington Post: A list of proposed school closings in Washington, D.C., has been making its way around city neighborhoods school district officials say it’s not accurate and they didn’t produce it. Chancellor Kaya Henderson is expected to propose a round of school closures sometime next week in an effort to reduce the number of underutilized facilities. The document being distributed via the Internet lists 38 schools, including several that would be odd — bordering on unbelievable — choices for closure.
