It's not easy going green in Texas

State does not offer incentives for schools to build environmentally friendly schools.

Several states are blazing green building trails, offering school districts incentives to build schools that are environmentally friendly and energy efficient. Texas is not among them. California and Massachusetts help fund construction of what they call high-performance schools: those that minimize environmental impact and maximize the use of non-polluting, renewable resources. Other states, including New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island and Washington, are adopting similar programs. Officials at some Texas districts say that building schools to earn Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council would add too much to construction costs.
