Translators help parents communicate with New York City schools

42 percent of the parents of students are not native English speakers.

The New York City Department of Education employs 28 linguists to communicate more effectively with the 42 percent of parents who are not native English speakers. The school system has a unit that translates school documents, such as press releases, report cards and parent surveys, into the eight languages most commonly spoken in New York, after English: Spanish, Chinese, Russian, Bengali, Arabic, Urdu, Korean and Haitian Creole.
