Teacher attrition could create shortage

Report says retirements and young teachers leaving could strain education system

From The New York Times: Over the next four years, more than a third of the nation’s 3.2 million teachers could retire, depriving classrooms of experienced instructors and straining taxpayer-financed retirement systems, according to a new report. The problem is aggravated by high attrition among rookie teachers; one of every three new teachers leaves the profession within five years, says the report by the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future.
