The charter is authorized by Grace College and will be managed by Leona Group. The school's co-founder, Thomas Smith, worked in the Fort Wayne school district for nearly 30 years as a teacher and administrator. Smith had hoped the school would have a new building on the city's southeast side, but because of funding challenges, SAFE is situated in a building that once housed St. John Lutheran School.
