Detroit school budget calls for larger classes, more spending cuts

From The Detroit Free Press: Next year's budget for the Detroit Public Schools will mean an increase in class sizes -- to nearly 40 students in some grades -- and 25 percent in spending cuts as the district faces a deficit that has grown by $144 million in the past year, according to a summary of the proposed budget.

A deficit-elimination plan filed with the state of Michigan last month projects the district will end this school year with a deficit of $332 million, up from $218.9 million last year.
