Couple sues Texas district over background checks of visitors

Lake Travis district scans driver's licenses before letting visitors enter schools
Dec. 1, 2008
A couple has filed a lawsuit against theLake Travis (Texas) school district in one of the first legal challenges over the background check systems that many districts are using to check on visitors in a growing number of schools. In the lawsuit, Yvonne and Larry Meadows say that the district's background check policy violates their constitutional rights to freedom of association and freedom from unreasonable search and seizure as well as several state laws. The Meadowses contend in their suit that when the district's Bee Cave Elementary School began using the software in 2006, the principal refused to allow Yvonne Meadows to attend several school events unless her driver's license was scanned.
