Many analysts say time is growing short for passage of a major education bill before the fall elections because Congress is consumed by the economy, health care and financial regulation, among other issues. EARLIER...from The New York Times: The Obama administration is proposing a sweeping overhaul of the No Child Left Behind eduation law. The administration is seeking broad changes in how schools are judged to be succeeding or failing, and will try to eliminate the law’s 2014 deadline for bringing every American child to academic proficiency. U.S. Education Department news release: The proposed budget reflects the president's broader commitment to providing more flexibility, reducing red tape, and holding ourselves accountable for results, the department says.
