175 teachers laid off in Kansas City (Mo.) district

Nearly 600 employees overall have been let go as system closes two dozen schools
Aug. 12, 2010

From The Kansas City Star: With a little more than two weeks until the school year begins, the Kansas City (Mo.) district has sent layoff notices to 175 teachers. Nearly 600 employees overall have involuntarily lost their jobs; most of the cuts were made earlier this summer, but not teachers. The district struggled to finish teaching assignments it originally intended to complete by the end of May. Most of the cuts were prompted by the closure of 24 schools plus three leased facilities.
