Strict nutrition rules now in effect in Texas school cafeterias
From The Dallas Morning News: The stricter Texas Public School Nutrition Policy, phased in over the last several years, is now in full effect. That means no more deep-fried anything, no more sodas and no more so-called "foods of minimal nutritional value." The big change this year is the elimination of deep-fat frying for any food prepared on the premises. In the Irving school district, for example, "fries" will instead be baked in 11 new "combi ovens."
RELATED: From The Chicago Tribune: Many school districts are phasing out sweet treats for students, but Chicago Public Schools officials continue to let them eat cake. And it's not just cake that the district serves daily to most grade schoolers. It's also chocolate fudge pudding, cookies, Rice Krispies treats, and pound cake, according to school menus. Earlier this year, district officials said the daily dessert policy was under evaluation. But the Tribune has learned the district will continue to buy and serve the sweets to most of its 240,000 elementary school kids -- 80 percent of whom are on the free and reduced lunch program.
