Utah district tries to accommodate growth without new buildings

Wasatch County district looks to reconfigure grades to avoid cost of new construction

Reeling from enrollment growth, the Wasatch County (Utah) School District is looking to reconfigure its schools in an effort to avoid constructing new buildings. In 2006, Wasatch County voters approved a $59.5 million bond for a new high school, and district officials are reluctant to go back to taxpayers with more build proposals. The move would redefine elementary school as grades K-4; intermediate school as 5-6; junior high as 7-8; and high school as 9-12. Without the shift, the district could be faced with building a new elementary -- estimated at $18 million -- and replacing the junior high for $31 million to $36 million.
