Wake County business leaders try to settle dispute between county and school officials

In an effort to quash feuding between the Wake County (N.C.) school board and county commissioners, two civic groups have proposed a pact to settle disputes over land deals and money. Leaders from the Wake Education Partnership and the Greater Raleigh Chamber of Commerce want the county to provide a set amount of money each year to the school district for operating schools. In return, the school board would hand over control of school land deals and maintenance to commissioners. Leaders of the partnership and chamber are leaving it up to school and county board members to work out two crucial details: how long the agreement would run and how much money the county will be expected to give the school system each year.

FROM JANUARY 2008: Wake County (N.C.) school administrators want an additional $20.4 million to buy land for new schools. Administrators are asking the school board for $15.8 million to buy sites for at least three new schools that won't open until 2013. The remaining $4.6 million would cover extra costs anticipated to complete the purchase of land for 12 schools slated to open by 2012.
