Texas judge says cheerleaders may continue to display banners with Bible verses

From The Houston Chronicle: Cheerleaders in the Kountze (Texas) district may continue displaying banners with Bible verses during football games until a lawsuit over the issue is resolved. Judge Steve Thomas has granted an injunction in a lawsuit over religious freedom and the First Amendment. Thomas ruled that a ban imposed by the Kountze Independent School District appears to have violated the cheerleaders' rights to religious expression. A full trial on the merits of the lawsuit has been set for June 24. During this season's football games, players burst through signs referencing Bible passages.

SEPTEMBER 2012....from KHOU.com: A judge in Texas has issued a temporary restraining order preventing the Kountze school district from imposing a ban on religious signs at games and other school-sponsored events. Attorneys sought the court order on behalf of cheerleaders in the district who have put Bible verses on run-through signs they display at school football games. After the preliminary ruling, religious signs and banners filled the stands at a Kountze Middle School football game. The dispute began after someone mailed a complaint to Kountze superintendent Kevin Weldon about the cheerleaders' signs at a high school game. The Texas Association of School Boards advised him the practice should end immediately.
