Harvard plans solar array on old arms factory
From The Boston Globe: Harvard University is installing a massive array of solar panels on a centuries-old arms factory to help meet the goal of reducing its carbon footprint. By the end of the year, officials say, a 500-kilowatt solar array -- nearly 2 1/2 football fields in length -- will grace the rooftop of the largest building at the Harvard-owned Watertown office complex The Arsenal on the Charles. Built in 1816, the arsenal once produced cannons for Navy ships, as well as field artillery, siege guns, and ammunition used in both world wars. Because of the building’s age, Harvard officials said they chose a solar installation that won’t penetrate the roof and can’t be seen by passersby.
