Worst-case teacher layoffs detailed in New York City

From The New York Times: The New York City Department of Education has made public a list that estimates the number of teachers each school will lose to layoffs if the state does not allocate more money for schools and seniority rules are not changed. The layoffs would spare virtually no academic subject or neighborhood, and they would affect 80 percent of the city’s 1,600 public schools. Bloomberg plans to lay off nearly 4,700 teachers, according to a budget proposal. Bloomberg has indicated the reductions are needed to make up for a loss of $2.1 billion in state aid. The spending plan from the mayor calls for eliminating 6,166 teaching positions: 4,666 through layoffs and 1,500 through attrition. That would reduce the 75,000-person teaching force by 8 percent, and it would be the first time the city has laid off significant numbers of teachers since the 1970s.
