Fairfax County district needs bus drivers

Aug. 30, 2007
About 110,000 students ride school buses, but the district can't find enough drivers.

Hiring enough bus drivers in the Fairfax County (Va.) district is difficult and likely to get harder. As of mid-August, the district had 1,140 drivers but still needed about 50. Filling the vacancy will become even more of a challenge if the district follows through on plans to start the high school day later so that teenagers--who sometimes board buses at 6:30 a.m.--can get more sleep. Such a shift would require an overhaul of a transportation system that already is stretched.
