Texas superintendent accused of taking bribes

Administrator in Pharr-San Juan-Alamo district charged with steering business to favored businesses.

Sex, paid vacations and more than $600,000 in monetary gifts are among the many bribes federal authorities say Pharr-San Juan-Alamo (Texas) Superintendent Arturo Guajardo and three school board members accepted in exchange for funneling projects to a preferred group of area businessmen. A federal indictment alleges that between 1998 and 2004, the gifts influenced board decisions on contracts for school repair work, construction of sports facilities and insurance plans for district employees.
