Expansion plans at John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio, disputed

School contends restrictions imposed by University Heights are unconstitutional
Jan. 31, 2011

From The Cleveland Plain Dealer: John Carroll University in University Heights, Ohio, owns 35 homes, eight apartment buildings, a shopping center and a former temple that it purchased. Officials say the university needs the land and buildings for three priorities: parking, residence halls and athletic fields. But some who live near the campus, along with some University Heights and Shaker Heights officials, are uneasy because they don't think the university has specifically explained its plans. The university is now in federal court appealing what it says are unconstitutional restrictions imposed by University Heights on using one of its homes, including a ban on further purchases in a neighborhood near campus.
