The Manatee County (Fla.) school board has taken the first solid steps toward a $21 million project that would give about 700 school district employees a better work environment. For 15 years, the school board has been planning to overhaul the Matzke Complex, a hodge-podge of 16 buildings and 13 portables that house the district's construction, maintenance and transportation workers. District officials want to rid the complex of some portables and consolidate employees in an 83,000-square-foot space with offices, maintenance shops, vehicle repair bays, fuel stations and other work sites. It has hired an architect and a construction manager for the project.
