Carolina college urged to stress retention

As North Carolina Central University in Durham searches for a new chancellor to replace James Ammons, many want a leader that stress student retention as much as Ammons emphasized recruitment. During Ammons' tenure, enrollment at the historically black college increased 50 percent. However, in 2006, about 30 percent of NCCU freshmen didn't return for their sophomore year. That's close to the national average, though a bit worse than the average for the state's 16-campus public university system. Ammons is moving on to Florida A&M University.
