777 school employees will be laid off in New York City

Budget shortfall forces cuts in school aides, other positions
Aug. 24, 2011

From The New York Times: Budget cuts will cost 777 New York City public school employees their jobs by October. Most of the burden will be shouldered by one labor union, District Council 37, which represents 95 percent of the workers who will be let go. Last year, school aides were saved from layoffs last year by federal money, but now 438 — about 5 percent of their ranks — will lose their jobs. In addition, 82 parent coordinators will lose their jobs. The budget cuts also have cost 2,186 teachers their full-time, fixed assignments at city schools.
