FEMA, St. Tammany Parish (La.) district at odds over high school design

Salmen's campus is being rebuilt after it was devastated by floodwaters after Hurricane Katrina.

A clash between the St. Tammany Parish (La.) school system and the Federal Emergency Management Agency has temporarily stalled progress on plans for a new campus for Salmen High School in Slidell. FEMA is reviewing estimates for the high school's proposed design. But the school district's preferred design--one that contains the same square footage but consolidates certain wings from the original design--has prompted heated discussions, disagreements and delays. Salmen's campus was inundated by floodwaters after Hurricane Katrina, and most of the buildings were beyond repair.
