Xavier University has won approval from the city of New Orleans to demolish 17 heavily damaged buildings that it owns and replace them with modular homes for its faculty and staff. The school, which already had received permits to raze four other structures in the area, hopes to have all 21 gone by January.

This action, coming nearly two years after post-hurricane floodwaters drowned the campus, has touched off a lively argument. On one side, people have warned eliminating the structures could destroy the neighborhood's residential character; others think it's time for the buildings to go because all but one have been empty since Hurricane Katrina.
