The Roman Catholic Archdiocese ofMiami says it will close six schools and may convert some surviving institutions to secular charter schools. The schools to be closed: St. Clement in Wilton Manors, Our Lady of Divine Providence in Sweetwater, Corpus Christi in Allapattah, Sacred Heart in Homestead, St. Francis Xavier in Overtown and St. Stephen in Miramar. North Miami's Holy Family -- told in November not to expect any more financial support from the archdiocese -- came up with its own survival plan and will stay open. The archdiocese says it will consider turning some campuses into charter schools -- which would remove them from the Archdiocese's control and make it unconstitutional to offer religious instruction. EARLIER: With posters and petitions on hand, 200 angry parents and teachers packed the parish hall of Sacred Heart Catholic Church to plead with parish leaders after learning that only Catholic school in Homestead, Fla., will close in June. In Miramar, parishioners of St. Stephen Catholic School learned their school would meet the same fate.
