New York City plans to open 54 new schools in 2012-13

30 will be district-run and 24 will be charter schools

News release: New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Dennis M. Walcott say that the city will open 54 new public schools in the 2012-2013 school year, bringing the number of new schools opened under the Bloomberg Administration to 589. The new schools will welcome more than 7,000 students next year, and more than 21,000 when they grow to full size. Of the new schools slated to open this fall, 30 will be run by the district and 24 are charters. Since Bloomberg took office in 2002, the city has open 589 new schools.
