Funding boost for D.C. schools

Mayor says additional $81 million will help district restructure central office, cover budget shortfall.

Washington, D.C., public schools would receive $81 million in additional revenue to fund a sweeping restructuring of the central office and help cover a projected budget shortfall, under a plan announced by Mayor Adrian Fenty. Fenty and School Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee characterized the proposal as a one-time cost that would enable them to streamline the system, improve programs, including food service, and maintain surplus school building space.

The Office of the State Superintendent of Education in Washington, D.C., could increase its staff from about 80 employees to more than 400 under a reorganization plan prompted by the mayoral takeover of the city's public schools. The agency will mostly take responsibility for programs already established and funded and doesn't anticipate many new hires. Officials don't have a complete list of the city agencies and departments from which the employees will come.
