Smallest elementary in DuPage County, Ill., closes

South Elementary in Westmont shuts down after 86 years.

After 86 years, South Elementary School in Westmont, Ill., held its last official day of classes Monday. With only 150 pupils, South was the smallest elementary school in DuPage County. The low enrollment had become a luxury District 201 officials no longer could afford. By closing South and combining the enrollment with nearby Manning Elementary, the district will save as much as $700,000 a year.
