City envisions urban village north of campus

For years, California State University San Marcos had few neighbors. The rapidly growing university occupies part of what once was one of the largest chicken ranches in the nation. Now, it has company in the form of retail stores west of it and condominiums to the south. But there's still room for development north of the university, and the city of San Marcos is reassessing its vision for the land. It envisions an “urban village” that could feature housing for university faculty members and students, other types of housing, retail stores, offices, hotel rooms and conference centers.
