Hillsborough County (Fla.) district shows slight enrollment hike

Sept. 24, 2009
Bad economy may have prompted students to transfer from private schools

From The St. Petersburg Times: More students have enrolled in the Hillsborough County (Fla.) schools this fall, but that might have more to do with economic stress than recovery, officials say. At least part of the increase was fueled by a wave of 2,367 students who left private schools. Total enrollment this week, including prekindergarten, was up by 664 students to 192,358.

Earlier...from The St. Petersburg Times: The Hillsborough County (Fla.) district appears likely to grow this year, despite projections of a third straight year of enrollment losses. The district counted 190,366 students Tuesday, up 438 students compared to the same day last year. If those numbers hold, they'll surpass the projected official October count of 188,228, which would have marked a decline from last fall.
