Enrollment drop forces Hazel Park (Mich.) district to close two schools

4,700-student system saw student numbers decline by 215 this year.

Declining enrollment and the ensuing reduction in state funding have led the financially strapped Hazel Park (Mich.) School District to some drastic measures: The district is laying off more than 100 teachers and closing two elementary schools. The two elementary schools slated to close on June 15 are Longfellow and Ford Community. Officials projected that enrollment would drop by about 100 this year, but the actual decline was 215.
