Opening delayed at Montpelier (Vt.) schools

Aug. 11, 2008
Possible asbestos contamination has hampered middle school repairs
Montpelier (Vt.) school officials say city schools will start late this school year. The first day of school — for all three schools — will be Tuesday Sept. 2, instead of the originally scheduled date of Aug. 28. The new date was set with the hope that construction on the hallway floors of Main Street Middle School will be mostly, if not completely, finished. Union Elementary and Montpelier High School will open on Sept. 2 regardless of any further delays at the middle school. Main Street Middle School was shut down on July 28 because of possible asbestos contamination. Department of Health officials have been working with the Environmental Protection Agency investigating the incident.
