Two Florida charters defy order to close

Brevard County board ordered Osprey and Sawgrass charters to shut down.

Administrators, teachers, parents and students at Osprey and Sawgrass charter schools in Brevard County, Fla., have disobeyed a school board order that the sister schools close. At least 46 of the 61 elementary and middle school students who started with the school a week ago attended school Wednesday morning. But the schools are in limbo--they no longer can be considered a public school, supported by taxpayer funds, and refuse to become a private school. It is unclear where the money to continue operating is coming from. District administrators say the charters have failed to meet student performance goals and haven't met generally accepted standards of fiscal management.
