Free bus rides curtailed for students in Hernando County (Fla.) district

July 1, 2011
Students who live within 2 miles of school will have to pay to ride the bus

From The St. Petersburg Times: Hundreds of families in the Hernando County (Fla.) district will have to make different plans next year for transportation to and from school. The school board has voted to eliminate so-called courtesy bus service for students who live within 2 miles of school. The board is working to close what was a few weeks ago a roughly $11 million budget shortfall. More than 2,400 students take advantage of the service, and the district will save about $800,000 by dropping it.
