Portland (Ore.) district cuts back central office staff

March 23, 2012
23 administrators will be laid off, and 15 positions will be eliminated

From The Portland Oregonian:Portland (Ore.) Superintendent Carole Smith has decided to lay off 23 employees from the school district central office and eliminate 15 other central administration positions. Smith is eliminating the 38 positions, out of roughly 500 jobs in the district central office, to save money. She has estimated she must cut about $18 million worth of programs and services to balance the 2012-13 budget; she is trying to take about half of that from the central office and the rest from schools.
