Grossmont (Calif.) district objects to charter school
A charter school approved by the San Diego school district is causing a stir with its last-minute plans to open within the boundaries of the Grossmont Union High School District. Grossmont Superintendent Terry Ryan is worried that the Health Sciences High School and Middle College--the brainchild of a group of San Diego State University professors--will siphon students from the district. Ian Pumpian, a founder of the charter school, says the school has not been able to find a suitable location in San Diego. It settled on the Coleman College campus in La Mesa.
