Biloxi, Miss., councilman wants elementary to stay open

Board says Nichols Elementary School is closing because of declining enrollment and decreased district revenue
June 7, 2010

From The Biloxi Sun Herald: Biloxi, Miss., City Councilman Bill Stallworth wants the School Board to reconsider its decision to close Nichols Elementary, saying members are discriminating against a historically black school that performs better than any other in the district. Stallworth wants the board to provide the $450,000 needed to keep Nichols open another year to give the community time to think of other alternatives. The district says the decision to close Nichols and two other schools was based on declining enrollment and decreased district revenue.
