K.C. plan would phase out middle schools

Kansas City (Mo.) district proposal for restructuring schools would establish neighborhood schools for grades K to 8

Kansas City (Mo.) School Superintendent Anthony Amato has unveiled his proposals for school closings. He wants to return to neighborhood elementary schools that serve students through the eighth grade. Under Amato’s plan, most middle schools would be phased out within three years. Elementary boundaries would be redrawn, and children in the fourth grade or below would be reassigned to their neighborhood schools; fifth-graders and above could continue in their current schools if they wish.
