University of Tennessee boosts security near sorority housing

600 sorority members are moving into a newly renovated residence hall

TheUniversity of Tennessee is adding streetlights, emergency phones and security cameras on 16th Street in Knoxville to make the area safer for an influx of female students. About 600 sorority members will be moving into the newly renovated Laurel Residence Hall this fall. The hall is off-campus, and UT officials are encouraging the young women to use 16th Street as a route to campus. The new safety corridor and renovations to Laurel hall come as UT expands and upgrades its housing offerings, particularly apartment-style housing.
