Rolling downhill in a school bus with screaming classmates and no driver, a fast-acting 11-year-old boy in Cleveland jumped behind the wheel and steered the bus into a pillar, stopping it from careening out of control. Some children jumped out the side door and rolled into the street. Fifteen children suffered minor injuries and were treated at hospitals and released. The boy who stopped the bus likely saved the children from worse injuries. The bus was carrying 27 children, kindergartners through seventh-graders. The driver had stopped for fuel and was in the station's restroom when the bus started to roll. State law prohibits bus drivers from leaving their vehicles at any time when students are on board and drivers are not allowed to stop for gas during their route, says a spokesman for the Ohio Department of Education.

FOLLOWUP: A Westlake, Ohio, company and owner of the runaway charter school bus that crashed Monday was not registered with the state. The Ohio Department of Education is calling on the State Highway Patrol to investigate the early morning accident that had students from the Arts Academy in Cleveland screaming and jumping off the bus before it hit a bridge pillar.
