Students in Michigan persuade district to keep alternative school open
From The Detroit Free Press: Roseville (Mich.) Community Schools needs to cut $6.8 million from the district's $66 million budget next year, and an additional $7 million will have to be cut the following year. One of the cuts was going to be closing the alternative high school, where 200 attend. Students at Roseville Alternative School banded together to save their school. They appealed to everyone from the school board to Oprah Winfrey. And last week, they marched on the administrative office, where they were invited inside to talk. This week, a reprieve was granted. The school will remain open, but its budget was cut to $150,000 a year. Students are to move into an empty wing in Roseville Junior High School. There will be four teachers instead of eight, raising class size from 12 to 24.
