With cap on charters lifted, 15 new schools coming to Michigan

April 10, 2012
8 of the new schools granted charters will be in Detroit

From The Detroit News: The first wave of new charter schools to be approved since the lifting of a statewide cap includes eight that will open in Detroit. The Michigan Association of Public School Academies has released a list of 15 schools granted charters in late March. In addition to the eight in Detroit, one each will be in Hamtramck and Harper Woods. The remaining five are outside Metro Detroit. In December, Gov. Rick Snyder signed a law removing the limit on university-authorized charter schools. This year the number of university-authorized charters increased from 150 to 300. It will increase to 500 by the end of 2014, and the limit will be entirely removed in 2015.
