University of Vermont ends use of “compostable” cutlery

Vegetable-based knives and forks turn out not to be biodegradable

From The Burlington Free Press: Compostable cutlery, a one-time emblem of environmental responsibility, no longer can be found in dining halls or other food venues at the University of Vermont. The reason is simple: Many of those vegetable-starch-based knives, forks and spoons turn out not to be biodegradable after all. They can spend years in commercial compost heaps and come out looking pretty much the same as they did when they were plowed in.
