730 teaching jobs on chopping block in Houston district

Job performance issues and budget cuts are blamed for reductions
April 12, 2011

From The Houston Chronicle: About 730 teachers in the Houston Independent School District won't have jobs next year because of state budget cuts or, in some cases, poor performance. A district spokesman says Houston is eliminating 567 teaching jobs because of budget constraints; 163 teachers won't have their contracts renewed because of “performance issues," The numbers could change as principals continue to review staffing decisions.
