Miami cuts 800 teaching positions

District says reductions resulted from principals' re-evaluating staffing needs

The Miami-Dade school district has eliminated 800 teaching positions over the past two weeks, district officials say. The teachers who held those jobs will likely be rehired to fill positions opened by attrition at other schools. But the reassignments could sharply reduce the number of new hires. A district spokesman says the cuts were made by principals and district budget specialists during the time in which they evaluate their schools' staffing needs and budgets. The news caused an outcry from teachers across the district.
