The state-run Recovery School District in New Orleans opened two more elementary schools Monday.

The state-run Recovery School District in New Orleans opened two more elementary schools Monday and eliminated a waiting list that prevented many students from attending classes. Before McDonough 42 Elementary and Julius Rosenwald Elemenary opened Monday, more than 300 students who had tried to enroll were told there was no room. The Recovery district, which has assumed control of most of the city’s public schools, is struggling to reopen buildings and find enough teachers to accommodate returning students who had left the area after Hurricane Katrina struck in 2005.
