Parent Sues School Over Religious Education Program
The American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana filed a complaint last month and has asked a federal judge to shut down a voluntary "release time" program for "By the Book Weekday Religious Instruction" offered to third- and fourth-graders in the Huntington County Community School Corp. (Ind.). The district claims the program neither advances nor inhibits religion. A 1952 U.S. Supreme Court ruling that allowed students to receive religious education during school hours, but not on school property has protected similar programs at other elementary schools.
